Working in Indian Country

Strengthen ND is promoting the Working in Indian Country virtual series to support relationship building, understanding, and equitable working relationships in Native and non-Native communities. This work is funded by USDA-Rural Development’s Rural Business Development Grant (FY2020). USDA is an equal opportunity provider, employer, and lender.
Working In Indian Country: Building Successful Business Relationships with American Indian Tribes is an interactive professional development series designed for federal, state, and local government officials and business leaders who have a need, or are required, to develop working relationships with American Indian tribes and organizations. The process of developing effective working relationships with American Indian tribes and organizations requires knowledge and understanding of: American Indian history, organizational protocol, trust and relationship building principles, communication, and fostering a collaborative environment. The workshop is instructed by Larry Keown (Author, Consultant, and Educator)  and was developed in partnership with the Association of American Indian Affairs.

Working in Indian Country will be presented virtually through seven interactive two-hour sessions, with a workbook and pre-session videos.  To allow for the history and customs of each of the Native Nations that share geography with North Dakota to be highlighted, Working in Indian Country will be split into three workshops.  Each workshop is limited to 40 participants.

Workshop 1: Native Nations of western North Dakota (Mandan, Hidatsa, & Arikara Nation)

Workshop 2: Native Nations of north central North Dakota (Spirit Lake Sioux Tribe & Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa)

Workshop 3: Native Nations of southern North Dakota (Standing Rock Sioux Tribe & Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate)

Participants are asked to choose one workshop in which to participate. Virtual sessions will be held every Tuesday and Thursday from 11:00 am CST to 1:00 pm CST. The workshop schedule is outlined below.
